Yukon Bear

Someone in my comments section anonymously requested that I do something with my SU Yukon set. I love requests like that! Thank you, anonymous person! So here goes...

...btw, if there's a stamp set you'd like me to play with please speak up. Sometimes these little nudges are what gets my mojo moving.

This card was done intentionally simply. After wrestling with that last card (thanks for the kind comments!) I wanted an easier design. No cuttlebugging, no designer papers (I skipped that on the last one, too, did you notice?), no paper piercing, just simple stamping, you know, like we used to do before accessory mania took over. It's funny, but I think I get more positive feedback when I go simple than when I doody it up.

So for this one I did direct to paper (basically rubbing the ink pad on the cardstock until it's fully saturated) on Always Artichoke cardstock with the Always Artichoke ink pad. It gives the cs a leathery or suede-ish appearance. It's wonderful for masculine cards.

Then on the More Mustard cs I used the Distressed Ink Antique Linen, direct to paper, and after that I stamped the SU Print Pattern background stamp in More Mustard over that.

For the bear I stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and then colored it and the main background with Copics. I touched up the background trees a bit with an Always Artichoke marker.

Well, it was fun taking out one of my least-used sets and one of my most-used background stamps to play, so thanks again for the nudge, whoever you are!

Recipe

Welcome Little Baby! ODBD

I had intended this card to be for a recent Mojo Monday challenge and an SCS color challenge. But I ended up combining 2 MMs, sorta, and goofing on one of the colors (mentioned below). So, hmm. Such is life for me lately. Does it count? I don't know. My perfectionism says no, but my laid-back side says yes. Who should I listen to?

No babies being born in our family right now, but I wanted to make a baby card anyway. This card is made with stamps from Our Daily Bread Designs' Children of God set.

For the Jesus image I stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black on white cs and colored with Prismacolor pencils.

I used 2 Nestabilities Classic Oval dies to set it off, kind of like a cameo. I tied a black gingham ribbon on the side and embellished it with a large clear gem. I had a really hard time trying to decide how to decorate this card. I tried so many things, colored gems, pearls, punched cs. But the clear gems struck me as being just right.

The designer paper is Basic Grey Stella Ruby (Tea with Jane). It's so lovely! I bought a single sheet of it, but looking at the whole collection, I think I need to buy it! Wow! Gorgeous with a capital G!

I stamped the outside word phrase using Brilliance Graphite Black ink and then cuttlebugged the paper using the Script embossing folder. I mounted it on black cs which was punched using the 'Diamond' border punch by Fiskars.

For the Rose Red area I stamped the SU Print Pattern background stamp in Rose Red ink. Then I cuttlebugged it using the Textile embossing folder.

On the green area I stamped the SU Canvas background stamp in Old Olive ink on what I thought was Always Artichoke cs, because that's the cs folder I found it in. But when I went to get some for the inside I suddenly realized that I had put the wrong cs in my AA folder at some point when tidying up! In fact, I think it's a CTMH cs because it looks white along the edges (their paper has a white core). So I can't say technically, that this is Always Artichoke, but it's AA-like.

For the inside I used more of the Stella Ruby paper. I added a few clear gems and the black stitching to keep the theme going from the outside, in.

Well, thanks for looking! Have a lovely day!

Sweet Cupcakes OCC Challenge - Limited Supplies

Ack! I just realized the ribbon was crooked in this pic! Oh well.

I'm not really happy with the way this card photographed. Too stark/dark for me. It looks much more cheerful and sunny in person.

This was for the OCC Challenge this week which is about using no designer paper and only up to 4 layers. I never realized how hard that would be! I do depend on layering quite a lot.

Since I had to limit my layers I thought I'd use some dimensional effects to make the card pop out more. I pierced holes all around the edge of the Old Olive cs and along the ribbon on either side on the Yoyo Yellow cs (haven't used that color in awhile!). I also pierced around the ovals.

Before piercing the Yoyo Yellow I stamped one side with the SU Print Pattern background stamp in VersaMark ink. Then I ran the other side through the Cuttlebug using the "Swiss Dots" folder. The vertical ribbon hides the line of demarcation between them.

I stamped the sentiment from the Inkadinkado set, "Birthday Cupcake" as well as the "sparkles" in Basic Black ink. The sparkles added a bit more "activity" to the overall look. I also stamped the "sparkle" on the oval in Bordering Blue ink, stamping off once on scrap paper to keep the images light. I used a water brush and the Bordering Blue ink pad to do a little shadow around the cupcakes. The cupcakes are colored with SU Markers: Only Orange, Blush Blossom and Old Olive. I used a clear glitter on the frosting and a star gem for the star on the top of the middle cupcake.

I'd seen someone add ribbons to one of those spiral paper clips, so I've been wanting to try it. Mine doesn't look as nice as the card I saw it used on, but it adds a bit of whimsy to this card, I think. I had a dickens of a time getting it to clip on to my satisfaction. I bent the oval I tried so much!

Dimensionals were used to pop out the ovals between and behind.

I think that about covers everything! Thanks for looking!

Stamps: SU Print Pattern, Inkadinkado Birthday Cupcake
CS: Old Olive, Yoyo Yellow, White
Inks: VersaMark, Basic Black, Bordering Blue
Markers: Only Orange, Blush Blossom, Old Olive
Other: Cuttlebug "Swiss Dots" embossing folder, Nestabilities Classic ovals (regular and scalloped), Glitter, 2-way glue, Dimensionals, Straight pin, Mat pack cushion, Ribbons, Spiral paper clip, Clear star gem

Roses in Winter SC184

Oy vey! Was this a hard challenge! I nearly gave up several times, but I am so glad I persevered because I'm pleased with the final result. However, I think trying to photograph this card was as much trouble as trying to design it! That pointed square on the bottom kept the card tilted when standing by itself, so I had to come up with a way to keep it straight. I think I need to get one of those cheapy plate/picture stands for cards like this. For now I had it stuck with Dimensionals to a big square punch. You can see it a little underneath.

Where to start? I originally was going to try doing this color challenge with this sketch challenge. But I got this wild idea to sponge Rose Red and More Mustard on the Purely Pomegranate cs and liked it so much I canned the color challenge (for now).

But first I stamped both the SU Print Pattern and the SU Canvas background stamps in Rose Red ink on the Purely Pomegranate cs. I always love that stamp combo as a background. But I'm not sure how easily you can see it in the pic. Click on it to enlarge and then maybe you can see it...at least a little...maybe. Trust me, it's there.

I wanted to cuttlebug the background (of course) and went with the Diamonds in the Rough embossing folder. Then I sponged it with Rose Red and More Mustard. Wow! What a great color that came out! Kind of an orangy red. Looks really rich in person.

My squares go off the card, unlike in the challenge design. I couldn't see going with a really small square punch, as it would've limited what I could stamp in the squares. And although this card would be a challenge to get into an envelope, I still like the way parts stick out. After I was done with the card, I thought that had I realized before stamping the sentiment and gluing everything down that this card would've looked really cool standing on its short side I would've changed the sentiment around.

For all the green square backgrounds I sponged Old Olive ink along the edges of Certainly Celery cs. For the little squares I stamped scenes from a SU Friendship's Journey stamp and 2 SU Botanicals stamps and a girl's face stamp from Rubber Cottage on white cs. I sponged them with Rose Red and More Mustard to match the background. I mounted them with Dimensionals on the green and then on black.

For the big square I knew I wanted the rose from SU Roses in Winter done in 3-D, so I stamped the biggest part of the rose 3 times and the middle part 1 time. I used Rose Red ink. I cut out 2 of the 3 biggest rose images and the center of the third one. Then I cut out the middle image. I sponged them all with Rose Red and More Mustard and then sponged the edges with Basic Black ink. I stuck the 2 largest rose images together, rotating one a bit to add a swirling effect. I stuck the middle rose image on next and then cut a piece of a Dimensional to stick the smallest piece on. The 3 leaves were stamped in Old Olive squiggled with a bit of Always Artichoke marker right on the rubber. Then I huffed on the stamp and stamped it. Then I sponged the edges with Basic Black ink.

After I stamped the sentiment from SU Happy Harmony I ran the white cs through the Cuttlebug using the Swiss Dots embossing folder. Then I adhered the rose and the leaves using Dimensionals.

Before putting all the squares on the background I added 2 polka dotted ribbons to continue the polka dotted theme of the main piece. I adhered the ribboned background to black cs. Then I added the squares...with Dimensionals. You can see I love Dimensionals a little too much.

Phew! It doesn't sound complicated, but it sure felt that way!

That's about it. Thanks for looking!

Mojo Monday Father's Day cards

I was over at Julee Tilman's awesome blog recently and was inspired to do my Father's Day cards using her Mojo Monday Week #39 design. It's so much easier to use a predetermined design.

This card was done for my hubby. I realized afterwards that the ribbon wasn't exactly like the design I was trying to replicate. Oh well. I used the dad and son stamp from SU Seaside Sketches and the "amazing" came from (interestingly) the SU Amazing to Zany set. The "dad" part was from "Girls are Weird", an alpha set by Purple Onion Designs. I used 2 different Cuttlebug embossing folders for the red CS and the designer paper (Basic Grey), Before cuttlebugging the red CS, I stamped it with the SU Print Pattern background stamp using VersaMark ink (might be a little hard to see).

For the dad and son part I stamped in black dye ink on the white CS background. Then I stamped the image again on another piece of white. I colored the image with various SU markers, using the smaller end of the Old Olive marker to do the grass. Then I cut it out and adhered it with Dimensionals to the white background. I used lots of Dimensionals!

Recipe:

Stamps: SU Seaside Sketches, SU Amazing to Zany, Purple Designs "Girls are Weird" alphas, SU Print Pattern
CS: Always Artichoke, Black, Real Red, Basic Grey designer paper, More Mustard
Inks/Markers: Basic Black, Real Red, Ruby Red, Close to Cocoa, Summer Sun (with Close to Cocoa in the hair), Chocolate Chip, Bordering Blue, Blush Blossom, Old Olive
Other: Cuttlebug embossing folders: "Mesh" and "Tiny Bubbles", Zigzag ribbon, 1" circle punch, 1&1/4" circle punch, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Dimensionals

The second card is for my dad. He loveslovesloves to fish out in his boat, so I've gotten a lot of use out of the SU Fishin' set for him, but I think I'm due for a change. This set has served me well, though.

I did the cuttlebugging on the circles designer paper (Basic Grey), which I LOVE (I'm trying to keep myself from buying too much designer paper. It can become addictive! So I'm using what I have for as long as I can stand it). The fishing scene was actually done using 3 stamps from the set using my beloved Stamp-a-ma-jig. I stamped the basket first, then made a mask and covered the basket. Then I stamped the cat tails once and then with the grassy stamp several times to cover up the "water" under the cat tails. I removed the mask and colored the images with markers and a water brush and ink pads.

The "awesome dad" alpha set is one I got...somewhere. Can't remember who made it. I've had it for quite awhile and have rarely used it. Lots of Dimensionals on this one, too. Where would I be without Dimensionals??

Recipe:

Stamps: SU Fishin', unknown alpha set
CS: Always Artichoke, Black, Basic Grey designer paper, Glossy white
Inks/Markers: Basic Black, Old Olive, Really Rust, More Mustard, Creamy Caramel, Bordering Blue, Close to Cocoa
Other: Cuttlebug embossing folder "Tiny Bubbles", Zigzag ribbon, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Dimensionals, Sizzlets oval die (for larger oval), oval punch (for smaller oval)

Mother's Day cards

I was able to get all the Mother's Day cards made this afternoon. I kept them similar in color and style with some variations. It simplifies things. I'll put up recipes later. Too tired to think that hard right now.

The 2 "Mom" cards are for my mom (obviously) and hubby's mom. The other 2 are for my grandmother and my aunt. I like to acknowledge all the elder women in my family who are moms. The basic designs are designer papers, Cuttlebug embossing folders, ribbons, sponging of inks, and mini-brads. More later!

Recipe (combined for all cards):

Stamps: Print Pattern, Love Without End, Non-SU

CS: Black, designer papers (Basic Grey, I think)

Inks:
StazOn Jet Black, various colors I sponged on over the designer papers

Other:
Cuttlebug embossing folders "Stylized Flowers", "Tiny Bubbles" and "Script", black ribbon, plaid ribbon, gold thread, leather ribbon, 1/16" hole punch, 1/4" square hole punch, 1/2" circle hole punch, silver mini-brads, antique bronze mini-brads, black mini-brads, Dimensionals, sponges, Stamp-a-ma-jig

Pocket card

Recipe:

Stamps: Canvas, Love without End, Amazing to Zany, Stampabilities "Love is a Fruit", Print Pattern (although almost not worth mentioning), CTMH Storytime Uppercase and Lowercase

Paper: Black, Bravo Burgundy, True Thyme, Naturals Ivory, Basic Grey "Blitzen" collection designer paper

Ink: True Thyme, Basic Black, Versamark (on circles/flowers scraps)

Accessories: Cuttlebug "Tiny Bubbles" embossing folder, sewing machine, many different circle punches (1/4", 1/8", 1/16", 1"), corner punch, double rectangle punch, lg. flower punch, sm. flower punch, mini brads, Dimensionals, Diamond Glaze

Here's my contribution to this week's Sunday Sketch Challenge.

This time Amy used a pocket card design which thrilled me, as I was wanting an excuse to make one!

This one is actually a little bigger than her standard design sketch because I gave in and framed it in black after doing the main part without it. Just can't hep myseff. So this probably wouldn't fit in an A4 envelope.

The cardstocks used are black for the biggest piece, then Bravo Burgundy, then a piece of designer paper from the Basic Grey Blitzen collection. The cardstocks used on the pocket insert are black and True Thyme. The word saying on the front is stamped on Naturals Ivory (aka Quest Cover Ivory). The circle/flower thingies use black and True Thyme.

*deep breath* Okay, where to begin? lol This card is so convoluted, I'm not sure what to talk about first! I guess I'll go from back to front.

Nothing to speak of on the black. The burgundy was sponged with Basic Black ink. I used a corner punch on the burgundy cs and the designer paper. The designer paper was tacked very lightly with mono to the burgundy cs and was then sewed on using a zigzag stitch, although my sewing machine's settings must be a bit off - technically, the stitch isn't quite right. Nonetheless, it did look pretty cool. I am a major amateur sewer, btw! (Don't you hate that the word "sewer" means such different things, yet we think of the yucky definition when we see it spelled out? lol) Then I ran that sucker part-way through the Cuttlebug Tiny Bubbles folder and Cuttlebugged it, leaving the top un-Cuttlebugged. heh Finally, I sponged some Basic Black ink on the Cuttlebugged part to emphasize it more.

The piece I created to resemble the "edge" or "lip" of the pocket was made by punching holes with 2 different hole punches in a random fashion on black cs using a 1/4" punch and a 1/16" punch. I adhered that to a slightly smaller piece of True Thyme cs and mounted that onto the pocket with Dimensionals and a bit of Diamond Glaze for extra strength.

For the word phrase feature, I stamped the Canvas background stamp in True Thyme ink on the Naturals Ivory cs and then stamped the "Love is a Fruit" stamp by Stampabilities in Basic Black ink on top of that. I mounted it on black cs and used a 1/16" hole punch on the corners to allow for some antique copper mini-brads to be affixed. I mounted the whole thing on the front of the card with Dimensionals adhered with Diamond Glaze.

A close-up of the circle features:

For the circle features to the right, I used 4 punches: a larger circle, a larger flower, a smaller flower, and the 1/16" hole punch to put the mini-brads through. Honestly, the tiny hole punch was hard to use on such tiny objects. So I ended up using the tip of my x-acto knife to make the hole. I adhered these with Dimensionals and Diamond Glaze. You might notice a pattern on the True Thyme cs I punched out. That was from a cardstock scrap that had some stamping on it from the Canvas and Print Pattern stamps. I thought the look would be more interesting rather than just punching out of a plain, unstamped piece of cardstock.

Pocket insert:

For the pocket insert, I stamped with the Canvas stamp in True Thyme ink. Then I used the solid flower stamp from Love without End and the tiny word stamps from Amazing to Zany to decorate the surface. The letters for Jesus's name are from CTMH's Storytime Uppercase and Lowercase sets.

I cut a half circle in the True Thyme part of the insert by holding a circle punch upside down and positioning the punch where I wanted the half circle to be. Then I punched a double rectangle in the black and cut out the center with my x-acto knife so I'd have a larger rectangle with which to insert the ribbons. The ribbons are black organdy, blue grosgrain, and olive grosgrain with lines stitched up the middle.

Hoppy Birthday froggy card

Recipe:

Stamps: Unfrogettable, Shapes & Shadows, Hot to Dot wheel, Riveting, Print Pattern

Paper: Black, Sage Shadow, Glossy white, Pretty in Pink

Ink: VersaMark, Basic Black, Sage Shadow, Pretty in Pink, Apricot Appeal

Accessories: Crayon, sponges, Dimensionals, “stamp” deco scissors, zigzag ribbon, mini Pop Dots, circle punch (1&3/4”?)

Techniques: crayon resist

I did the main feature using one of my favorite techniques: crayon resist. I stamped the Unfrogettable critters in Basic Black on Glossy white cs. For added interest, I stamped the twinkle image from Shapes & Shadows. Then I ran a crayon around the edges of the critters and then sponged Sage Shadow, Pretty in Pink, and Apricot Appeal over them. Then I rubbed the crayon off with a rag and mounted the piece to black cs.

I rolled the Hot to Dot wheel twice over the Sage Shadow cs and mounted that to the black. I added the ribbon to the crayon resist feature and mounted that onto the Sage Shadow using Dimensionals.

Then I stamped the “Hoppy Birthday” stamp on Pretty in Pink cs which was already stamped with Print Pattern (a scrap from my collection) and punched it out with a big circle punch. I adhered that to a scrap of black cs and then cut it out using some “stamp” deco scissors. I adhered that to the crayon resist piece with Dimensionals.

I stamped the Riveting image on both Sage Shadow and Pretty in Pink in Basic Black ink. I punched out the middle on both, and then punched the outside of the Sage piece. I mounted the sage piece with mini Pop Dots onto the crayon resist piece. Then I mono-ed the pink center circle piece underneath and in the center of the sage piece.

Watercolored Flowers Card

I did some stamping yesterday afternoon as I had been wanting to play with the Cranberry Crisp cardstock ever since I bought it. It's not very impressive by itself, but it takes VersaMark ink very well and really comes alive under its influence.

I'm really liking the combination of Canvas and Print Pattern stamps. They really look awesome together. I hadn't played with my Petal Prints set in so long. I love that set. I need to play with it more often.

I did some more watercoloring with markers and a water brush, once again, layering and layering the colors for a richer look. Since Cranberry Crisp doesn't have a marker to go with the ink and cardstock, I used a combination of colors to achieve a good match. I used Really Rust, Baroque Burgundy, Ruby Red, and Chocolate Chip for the pseudo Cranberry Crisp tones. I used Pumpkin Pie over those colors to warm it up a bit more. (If you try this, you've got to wipe off the tip of the PP marker as you go because it picks up the darker colors. Or just use your re-inker and a water brush if you like. I prefer the marker and the water brush together.) I used Apricot Appeal and Pumpkin Pie on the lighter flowers and in the middle of the darker flowers.

For the tag, I ran black cardstock through the Cuttlebug with the tag die and then ran the tag I created through with the Script embossing folder.

Recipe:

Stamps: Petal Prints, Summer By the Sea, Print Pattern, Canvas, Itty Bitty Backgrounds
Paper: Black, Cranberry Crisp, Glossy white Inks: VersaMark, Basic Black

Markers: Really Rust, Baroque Burgundy, Ruby Red, Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin Pie, Apricot Appeal

Accessories: Dimensionals, Cuttlebug tag die, Cuttlebug Script embossing folder, sm. rectangle punch (for notches), 1" square punch, black hemp cord, Stamp-a-ma-jig

Technique: Watercoloring

Happy Harmony friend card

Recipe:

Stamps: Canvas, Print Pattern, Happy Harmony, Amazing to Zany

Paper: Black (natch!), True Thyme, Ruby Red, White

Ink: VersaMark, True Thyme; Markers: Black, Always Artichoke, Ruby Red

Accessories: Brown/Black Gingham ribbon, Cuttlebug Script embossing folder, Water spritzer, Small oval punch, Dimensionals

Techniques: Watercolor Misting

Amy Westerman holds a weekly challenge on her blog that I like participating in. This card is from this week's challenge.

For the flowers, I applied the marker inks to the stamp and then very lightly misted it with water and stamped. I love the watercolor-y look it gives.

I love this design Amy challenged us to use! I slightly altered the sentiment location because I couldn't make it work where it was supposed to go on my card. Otherwise, I think I stayed true to the challenge. Thanks again Amy!

Grumpy morning coffee lady card

Recipe:

Stamps: Print Pattern, "Good Morning" woman by All Night Media, Word stamp from I Like Your Style, Coffee cups from Espress Yourself, Mesh by Magenta

Paper: Black (of course), Real Red, Taken with Teal, Glossy white

Ink: Basic Black dye, Markers: Basic Black, Ruby Red, Real Red, Tempting Turquoise, Creamy Caramel, More Mustard, Chocolate Chip

Accessories: Dimensionals, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Air art gun, 1" circle punch, 1&1/4" circle punch

This is for Amy Westerman's Super Sunday Sketch Challenge #4.

I saw a Bella stamp (Grumpbella) that made me remember that I had this cute old grumpy woman in my stamp stash. I figured it would be a good one for this challenge. Sorry I'm using Print Pattern YET AGAIN, but I just love that stamp. What can I say? It goes with everything! I will try to hold back, though. ;)

I popped the woman's coffee cup out with a tiny piece of a Dimensional:

Coffee triangular feature card

Recipe:

Stamps: Print Pattern, Espress Yourself

Paper: Black, Chocolate Chip, glossy white

Ink: Versamark, Basic Black dye, Close to Cocoa

Accessories: Markers: Close to Cocoa, Creamy Caramel, Summer Sun, Always Artichoke, Ruby Red, Chocolate Chip, Basic Black; Black organdy ribbon, Black polka dot ribbon, Dimensionals, Stamp-a-ma-jig, Inkworx art gun, 1&1/4" square punch, 1&1/2" square

Goofing around with a triangle feature I used in another card and a 5.5" x 5.5" square design.

Roses friendship card

Recipe:

Stamps: Print Pattern, Roses in Winter, Espress Yourself, Itty Bitty Backgrounds

Paper: Black, Rose Red, glossy white

Ink: Versamark, Rose Red, Always Artichoke, Basic Black

Accessories: Black organdy ribbon, polka dot grosgrain ribbon, small rectangle punch, 1&1/4" square punch, 1&1/4" square punch, Dimensionals, Inkworx art gun, Basic Black marker, Chocolate Chip marker

Here's another card with the triangle feature similar in style to my previous card. On the roses I inked the stamp with Rose Red dye ink, then colored around the edges with the Chocolate Chip marker, huffed on the stamp, and stamped the image onto the glossy white. The darker edges looked pretty cool.

Froggy fun thank you card

Recipe:

Stamps: Unfrogettable, Print Pattern, Simply Circles, Riveting

Paper: Black, Bashful Blue, Apricot Appeal, white glossy, white

Ink: Basic Black dye, Bliss Blue, Summer Sun, Only Orange, Versamark

Accessories: Sponges, crayon, 1&1/4" circle punch, Dimensionals, Black grosgrain ribbon

Techniques: crayon resist

I did the crayon resist technique on the frogs. It's one of my favorite techniques. I used Bliss Blue because I don't have Bashful Blue ink yet. I mixed Summer Sun and Only Orange to get the Apricot Appeal-ish look because, well, I don't have it either. Worked okay, though.

On the home stretch

I'm nearly done with my card swap - 13 cards in all. There is some tedious cutting-out to do, some pieces to adjoin, and a recipe to write and then I can package them all up and mail them.

I finished the P&P series last night and decided to watch Amadeus next. I've nearly memorized Mozart's music from this cd, so the pieces are much closer to my heart when I hear them in the film.

That's one nice thing about stamping, I get to watch many good movies while I create. :)
